Getting around

The free gondola

The free gondola links Telluride and Mountain Village in about 12 minutes, with a stop at San Sophia on the way. This winter it runs Nov. 20, 2026 to April 4, 2027, 6:30 a.m. to midnight every day. It closes for maintenance between seasons, when free buses link the two towns. Leashed dogs ride in the cabins marked with a paw.

Traffic & parking

Buses, parking and the roads

The free Galloping Goose bus loops through Telluride. The Carhenge lot (700 W. Pacific Ave.) is free all day, and downtown meters give you the first 30 minutes free each day. Mountain Village's Gondola Parking Garage is free by day, with a charge overnight. Before you drive Highway 145 or the passes in winter, check the road conditions.

Know before you go

You're up high

Telluride sits at 8,750 feet and Mountain Village at 9,545 feet. Expect dry air and strong sun, drink plenty of water, and take it easy your first day.

Free gondola

Runs between Telluride and Mountain Village, 6:30 a.m. to midnight, Nov. 20, 2026 to April 4, 2027. It closes for maintenance between seasons.

Free buses

The Galloping Goose is a free bus loop through Telluride. When the gondola is closed between seasons, free buses link Telluride and Mountain Village.

Parking

The Carhenge lot (700 W. Pacific Ave.) is free all day. Downtown meters on Colorado Avenue are $2.50 an hour, and your first 30 minutes each day are free. Mountain Village's Gondola Parking Garage is free by day and $40 overnight for a car (Nov. 2026).

Dogs and car camping

In Telluride, dogs must be leashed in Town Park and between Columbia and Pacific, and under voice control elsewhere. Car camping isn't allowed on streets or in public lots in Telluride, Mountain Village or Lawson Hill.
